This is the way I always go. Not only because it’s fastest, but because, despite the conventional wisdom, I find it the most beautiful of all. California natives always call it just ‘The Five’: not Highway Five or Interstate Five or I-5.

Hoo boy. As soon as I read that I knew she was going to get some angry responses. Sure enough, here’s the very first comment:

“The” in front of a highway number is NOT a CA native expression! It is rather, a SoCal thing based largely on CHP and LAFD radio chatter. It has become widespread all over the west into Arizona, Nevada and even Oregon, but is roundly discouraged in The Bay Area and in Norcal.

Those NorCal people, always so touchy about what SoCal people do. They need some lives to go along with their hoodies, Birkenstocks and burritos with rice in them.

I think being too empathetic is not a good thing. You can lose yourself and necessary boundaries. At some point, being too empathetic is self-indulgent or delusional.

Vogue Netherlands has published an editorial featuring blackface makeup.

The spread was intended to honor Marc Jacobs’ work over the years for Louis Vuitton. For the fall, 2008, and spring, 2009, seasons, Jacobs took inspiration from black beauty icons Grace Jones and Josephine Baker. To represent those seasons — rather than hiring a black model — Vogue Netherlands painted Jansen’s face black and had her wear a wig intended to mimic the texture of black hair.

You know, while you’re processing the coverage on the Boston Marathon bombings, just take a break now and then and think about it for awhile instead of trying to find all the information you can. Information will happen when it happens. The important thing is to not get inundated with meaningless rumors and random opinions to the extent that you get exhausted by them and forget that something terrible actually happened and that it isn’t “old news.”
